In fact, a lot of people would say otherwise! Both Barcelona and Lisbon are exceptional cities, but if you’re looking to save some money on your trip to Europe, I suggest choosing Lisbon. That being said, however, don’t assume that just because Barcelona is more expensive than Lisbon that it’s the better city. Food, attraction tickets, accommodations, and tours are typically higher in Barcelona than in Lisbon.Įven though both cities’ economies are similar in many ways, they can vary quite drastically when it comes to tourism.īoth Barcelona and Lisbon use the Euro, have massive influxes of tourists in the summer months, and boast their European charm and beautiful nearby beaches (the beaches in Cascais are incredible).Īlthough, even with all of these things in common, their cost of living is quite different which affects the cost of everything that the average tourist purchases including food, accommodations, and tours.

Lisbon is almost always the cheaper of the two cities, regardless of the time of year that you visit. Likewise goes for Barcelona!įor the most part, no… unfortunately.

Whereas, most people traveling to Spain land in either Madrid or Barcelona, with Barcelona being one of their main destinations for their trip. That’s not to say that Lisbon isn’t incredible, but simply that most people fly into Lisbon to explore the more southern reaches of Faro and the Algarveswith very little time actually being spent in Lisbon.

While I personally can’t say which one was better for me, I will say that Barcelona is typically the more popular choice. For me, I found both Lisbon and Barcelona to be exceptional European cities that I have recommended to countless fellow travelers.
